The Texas Department of Criminal Justice has several resources for volunteers. Note that you must complete an application and attend a half-day volunteer training session before you can do volunteer work inside TDCJ institutions. For available training dates and locations, see the TDCJ Volunteer Training Schedule. Please call the chaplain's office prior to attending a training session to ensure that you are admitted. An application may be completed at the volunteer training or you may download and complete the volunteer application beforehand. If you are approved for volunteer work, you will receive an acceptance letter in about six weeks.
After two years, an online refresher course must be completed online. Every four years, you must attend the onsite volunteer training session again.
Note: Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and ex-offenders must be on the outside for at least 18 months for consideration as a volunteer.
